My confession, perspective and prediction for November 9.

I have a confession to make..what I’m about to write may come as a surprise to some. Names and places have been changed for obvious reasons…

About a decade ago I was called upon to lead a group of pastors in a certain part of the city in preparation for a city-wide evangelistic crusade by a world-famous evangelist. On one occasion as a we gathered for prayer Father put a verse on my heart that had to do with Him not hearing the prayers of his people because of iniquity hidden in their heart. It prompted me to call for confession of any hidden sin that could possibly hinder  the answer to our prayers for God to heal our land. It didn’t take long for Holy Spirit to break down the walls and one by one almost every pastor in that group began to confess current dabbling and even obsession with pornography! Was I shocked? No. Why would I be. I was one of them. Was I disappointed? Yes, and ashamed that men who were called to be leaders of a flock of sheep had ended up following instead.

Now I don’t know what would be your initial reaction to this, but whatever it is I hope it’s tempered by grace. That same grace that Father exercised towards those men according to his promise in  James 5:16 (MSG) Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. God forgave, restored and revived those men that day and yes, he heard their prayers and revival did come!

Now my thoughts go to another man who is equally fallible and imperfect in many of his ways. A man who quite possibly has been called on by God(though he may not know it), to lead a country out of bondage on many levels. This man has been exposed as having been lewd, rude and prude in deplorable ways. Are we shocked? Yes, and we should be at the crassness of the conversation. But should our actions and behavior escalate beyond that without first examining our own record and being equally shocked at our own propensity to sin, or at least be able to say “there but for the grace of God go I”? Our greatest fear in the days ahead is that we would allow our displeasure at past or even present behavior to somehow thwart the will of God, assuming that God cannot or will not use a man with so many human flaws.

Well, let’s look at that for a moment.

First if all we must presuppose Fathers ownership and sovereignty over his world and never before has His providence depended on a king, president, or ruler. And it won’t on November 9, 2016. “The LORD can control a king’s mind as he controls a river; he can direct it as he pleases” (Proverbs 21:1 NCV). No ruler or authority can be given except God gives it (Romans 13:1) On one occasion the Lord turned the heart of the King of Assyria so that he aided them in the construction of the Temple. [1] On another occasion, he stirred the heart of Cyrus to release the Jews to return to Jerusalem. [2] Nebuchadnezzar was considered to be the mightiest king of his generation. But God humbled and put him in “detention” for seven years. [3] “The kingdom is the Lord’s, and He rules over the nations” (Psalms 22:28). On another occasion he lifted a King who was a rapist, adulterer, liar and murderer out of the mud and mire of his life to become one of the greatest kings of all time. God referred to King David as a man after Gods own heart.

So my conclusion and appeal through all of this is that we come to grips with the realty of mans fallibility but be acutely mindful of Gods ultimate authority. That we don’t allow our shock and disdain to become sin in our own lives causing us to become unforgiving, judgmental, harsh and self-righteous, clouding our judgment and robbing us of our right and responsibility to vote. That we move forward with the blessed assurance that the outcome of November 9 will be this: Another day of God’s perfect sovereignty. He will still be in charge. His throne will still be occupied. He will still manage the affairs of the world. The heart of the “King” will still be in His hands, and justice and mercy will still be his calling card.

Go in peace. Go in love. Go to the polls and do the right thing.
